Dance has been an integral part of my life. Thanks to my aunt who was a bellydancer, she took me under her wing as a youngin’. Dance came natural to me as walking. Alone in the corner of her dance studio, I emulated her movements when she rehearsed or taught class. Her students were amazed at how a 5-year-old girl caught on so quickly. She brought me on stage performing dance duets and solos. I wowed the audience with challenging choreography for my age. Many people remarked that I danced beyond my years. My ability to interpret the music through movement was visceral, a skill only conveyed by a dancer with years of experience. I continued to train in several dance forms: Brazilian samba at 9 years old with my mom, Afro-Haitian dance during my teens, and flamenco in my early 20’s to present day. I’ve spent subsequent years on and off learning different genres but my journey forward always took me back to my roots — bellydancing!

Nature plays a pivotal role in Japanese culture. It is interwoven within the fabric of Japanese daily life. For many Japanese, the Onsen or outdoor hot spring bath, is not only a place for relaxation and contemplation, but to reconnect with nature. What was once a staple in early period Japan, the oforu (Japanese bath) is now used as an escape from the high-tech modern urban jungle into the refuge of nature’s primitive simplicity…to become closer to the natural state of living.
Hinoki, by avant-garde niche house Comme des Garçons, is a fragrance that supposedly recaptures this natural state of living. Inspired by the Onsen (Japanese warm spring baths) and Scandinavian woods, the aromas of Japanese Hinoki and cedar are brought to life. Hinoki was launched in 2008 and was created in honor of men’s lifestyle magazine, Monocle. The nose behind Hinoki is Comme des Garçons perfumer, Antoine Maisondieu.

I’m a Bath & Bodyworks home fragrance hoarding whore. (Try saying that 20 times in a row!). This is the time of year when I take advantage of BBW’s holiday sales and scents. My husband always shakes his head every time I walk in there because I go off my rocker. I’m talking “mental, mental, chicken oriental”…100% cuckoo! Continue reading

As November nears its end, I can’t help but feel a terrible sadness. This is the time of year when I’m melancholy, a time to wave goodbye to the bright revelry of autumn and greet the gloom and doom of winter. Here in Northern California, the days are shorter and darker. The clear blue skies and sunny golden are traded in for gray upon gray. The end of autumn is a time for mourning. The trees shed their last leaves like tears. The earth sleeps and life is still. It’s the death of a season and the year slowly withers and dies. Continue reading

I love Mandy Aftel of Aftelier Perfumes. I really do. I respect her artistry and what she has done for natural perfumery. She’s basically the mother…lode who put natural perfumery on the map! This SF Bay Area natural perfumer can heavy-hit with the big niche brand boys (and girls). She has created many outstanding, magical compositions such as my favorites Cepes & Tuberose (supposedly what every aspiring perfumista/o must smell in their lifetime) and Honey Blossom (Finalist for Fragrance Foundation 2011 FiFi Award: Fragrance of the Year – Indie Brand).
But the Fig. *Heavy Sigh*. Oh, The Fig. Continue reading
