Right now Winter and Spring are at war with each other. Just when Spring is here to stay, a somber darkness moves in turning the sky a sullen gray. While others can’t wait to see the back of Winter, I’m holding on as long as I can. My favorite perfumes are winter fragrances and it saddens me that they will be hibernating in my drawer soon to make room for light florals and fresh greens for Spring. I know what you’re going to say, “Who cares about the season? Just wear what you want!”. I wish I could but it doesn’t feel right wearing a heavy winter fragrance in the spring or summer. For me, it feels like wearing a long, heavy wool coat in the 80 degree weather. I feel inappropriately dressed as far as I’m concerned.
Firebird Tobacco Honey and Alkemia Miel de Sauvage et Tabac were my favorites in my winter wardrobe — two cold weather fumes I’m surely going to miss… Continue reading
San Francisco independent soap company, Savor, has now climbed up the ranks of holy grail status in the soap department. Their soaps blow Lush out of the
water shower in my opinion. Their customer service is top notch. Easy transaction and quick turnaround! The owner, Lisa Salamida, is in the middle of recovering from eye surgery and I still received my order in two days! Talk about dedication to her customers. Their products match their level of customer service, high quality!
There’s a running joke between my parents and my husband. The subject of sticky rice leaves them laughing in stitches. My husband couldn’t get enough of this sticky sweet concoction at my parents’ house. He ate it every morning for breakfast. The parents were shocked when this Northern Irishman slathered his sticky rice with Nutella. Completely unorthodox! (He’s on to something, it’s actually quite good!) From then on, the first thing my parents would say to my husband is, “Sticky rice?”. They would bust out in belly-aching laughter and I would feel all left out.

Scented lotions and body creams are a wonderful alternative to perfume. They add another dimension to traditional perfume, the sense of touch. I love the feeling of a scented body cream once I slather it on after a refreshing shower. My skin feels silky soft and caressed by a delicate veil of scent. I start my day feeling pampered like a queen and ready to seize the day! Continue reading
Long Winter Farm, founded by Amanda Nolan & Joe Brown is an etsy bath and body company with a great sense of humor and a great line of products. Amanda & Joe live in a yurt in the woods of western Maine with their two kids and two goats. (If that’s not wholesome I don’t know what is.) Their products reflect their wholesome country lifestyle and philosophy. All of their soaps, body creams, and lip balms are “homegrown” and are not full of nasty chemicals and do not contain parabens, pthalates, or SLS. They have 29 different flavors of lip balm! Yes, 29 mouth-watering flavors Continue reading

If there is one thing the Middle East does well, it is the use of aromatics and spices in their confectionaries and desserts. Rosewater is a popular ingredient in Middle Eastern cooking. In Islamic culture, rosewater is often used as a halal substitute for red wine and alcohol in food. Turkish Delight, known as lokoum in Arabic, originated in Turkey and was introduced to Western Europe in the 19th century. These little perfumed pillow morsels of nutty pistachio, rosewater and powdered sugar are still popular today. Kulfi is a popular frozen dairy dessert (much like ice cream) throughout the Indian subcontinent. Continue reading
